ARRIVAL OP BUYO MARU. An arrival at Port Chalmers on Friday morning was the Japanese-owned steamer Buyo Mtini, from Makatea Island, via Bluff.. This vessel was built at Sunderland. in 1889, and is ol 2858 tons gross register. She is not of a, very now type, and to judge from her appearance -has recently lain idle for some time. She sailed formerly, under the German flag, being then known as the Hochheimer; and on the outbreak of war she took refuge in ICnlo-ciiau harbour, where she fell into Japanese hands. Her present owners are the Yamashita, Shipping Company, of Kobe, -and she is commanded by Captain I. fiagura, and manned by a Japanese crew. So far as can bo ascertained, she lias not previously visited these waters. After the discharge of some 25C0 tons of phosphates at Port Chalmers she will probably proceed to Sydney.

The whole of the cargo will bo put out at that port-. It is rumoured that the vessel will later visit Wellington. ■ PROSPECTIVE TRADER. ' The' Oamaru* dredge -Progress arrived at .Port Chalmers, early.on .Friday .morning, and was taken over by her new, owners,' Messrs. Miller Brothers. f She will be converted into a cargo steamer—a task of some magnitude, l but one that in view of the present demand for freight tonnage should bring its own recompense. Her future career lias, so far. not been I definitely decided upon, but she will probably enter, the New Zealand coastal trade, , . 1 The Karu, with a load of timber, is duo from Greymouth to-day. ■ Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that the Putilii, which sailed for Wanganui on Saturday, will go to the West Coast after leaving Wamganui. and will not be bank in Wellington for some time. Mr. F. L.
