FOR KING AND COUNTRY

AN APPEAL TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY. At an Atonement Service which was held at the Jewish Synagogue yesterday afternoon, the ' Rev. H. Van Staveren, referring to the death of Lieut. Manoy, of Motueka, said: "Intelligence has reached us of the death of a" son of one who was of the founders of this congregation. It must be a great solace to us all to know that lie died in the defence of his country, in the defence of truth, liberty, and freedom, and here on this sacred spot on this eve of atonement, I call upon all who are eligible for active service to consecrate their atonement by offering their services to the Dominion, and so show to all their love and honour for the flag that protects us, and loyalty to our King and country. "For those who are not able to take their places in the firing; line, there are avenues open by which they can render great aid to the cause we all have so much at heart. lam satisfied thus far that the members of my community have rendered valuable service to those iii authority, but I trust that they will spare no effort still to exert themselves to their utmost to exhibit to all that it is duty of the Jew to serve his King and country as well as to make his atonement before God."

The foundation-stones of the now Congregational Cliurch and Sunday School, in Cambridge Terrace, will be laid at 3 o'clock this afternoon by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds and Mr. W. G. Holdsworth. Several local clergymen will officiate, and the Rev. Geo. J. Williams, organising secretary of the London Missionary Soci'cty for Australasia, will offer a prayer. A short sermon will be given by the Rev.. W. A. Evans, 'addresses by the Revs. Archibald E. Hunt and J. Reed Glasson, and Rov. W. J. A. Vickery will pronounce benediction. Hymns will bo sung, and the Central Mission Band will be in attendance.

Pleasant spring weather, with the many attractions of Newtown Park and a recital by the Waterside "Workers 'Band, should make an enjoyable outing on Sunday afternoon. *
