MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. L. G. Roid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety, six first were, convicted and discharged. Wil-' liam Murphy" and -Thomas Coffey, with previous convictions, were fined 10s., in default 48 hours',-in each case. George-Lucas M'llroy, for insobriety, was convicted and discharged, and for using obscene language was fined 20s. Thomas M'Namara was charged that on June 15 he did attempt to commit a criminal offence, on a male. After hearing bvidoiice for tho,prosecution, accused, who pleaded' not guilty, reserved his defence,'and -was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Ball was allowed in £100 and two sureties of £50 eacli. Mr. T. M.Wilford. appeared for acoused. Herbert Mackersey was charged with the theft of two watches and a chain, of tho value of £3 10s., the property of John Warner, from Young's Private Boardinghousc, and Alfred Croft was charged with stealing a pair of binoculars, valued at 305., the property of John Warner, from the same hotel. According to tho evidence the goods wore missea 1 , and Mackersey waß suspected. Mackersey in tho meanwhile left for Grey mouth, •where he and Croft were arrested on board ship. Croft, it appears, was in the samo cabin as.Mackersey, and was. asked'by the latter .to tako the binoculars' ashore, in his basket, to which he,agreed. Ho had nevor been in the boardinghouse, sjhT know nothing of the ownership of tho goods. .Mackersey corroborated Croft's statement,. and the case against him was dismissed. J. O'Rogan for Mackersey. Victor Reginald Haelem, charged with attempting to commit a serious offonco on a male, was remanded for a week, bail being fixed at £100 and two sureties of. £50 each. . Victor. John Wallaco,' charged with breaking and entering a dwellinghouse at Lyall Bay and stealing £6 in money, was remanded for a week. Thomas Coogan, charged with having insufficient means of support, was also romauded for a week.
