A PECULIAR POSITION. , English advices contain particulars of a Tathcr interesting point in connection with tho loss of a noutral steamer.' The underwriters concerned worked on tho allrisk policy, and contend that she was not lost by a, marino peril, whilo tho war risk underwriters maintained that tho loss was occasioned by an ordinary marino , mishap. It , appears that the steamer'was bound to a French port in the Mediterranean with contraband, when' the crow heard »■ "heavy noise" and saw oil floating on,the water. Tho steamer herself sank within 25 minutes. It id probable that the steamer collided with an enemy submarine which was waiting ■to sink her, so that had sho not, sunk the submoirine she would have been torpedoed. Anyhow the .war, .risk, under-, writers maintain that the'stcaiqcr was 1 sunk, by-, collision in the- ordinary course of her Voyage, and not. as a Tosult ;of. warlike action. ... ~' AUSTRALIA'S FLEET. The fact that it has been decided to rename: all tho vessels Mr. Hughos purchased in London on behalf of Australia, 'selecting a word beginning "Austral," was made known some time ago, but it was not until recently that how the names had boon allotted was m&do public. The vessels and the former names are as follow:— Old Name. Now Name. Straithairly Australpool Strathavon ....:.. Australford Strathbeg Australmount Strathdeo Australgrange Btrathendrick Australdale Strathe'sk Australhrook Strathgarry ■ Australbash Strathleven Australcrag Strathford. ...- Australglen . Strathspey '. Au6tralpeak Ardangorm Au&tralport , Ardanmhor .". Australplain Kirkoswald Australmead Vermont .'. Auetralfleld MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A. P. Lauty, mate of the Wootton, haa signed off, and has been replaced by Mr. A. J. Holme. Mr. O. Riohardson has signed on. the Moraroa as purser. ' Mr. S. B. Pilcher has signed on the Oprinno. .as purser. .' The Hinemoa was unable to work Stephen- Island yesterday ■on account of the heavy seas running.. She' went on to Farewell Spit to attempt to land there. Tho Ngakuta sailed at 1.15 p.m. yester--1 day from Greymouth, and is due hero ' early this afternoon. . ■ ." 1 Tho Blenheim is due from Havelock -' and Pelorus Sound to-day, and will sail > for Titirangi on Saturday.
