RECRUITING

, __6 SUMMONING THE MEN. Forty additional recruits took the oath and received their first day's pay as members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force-at the Town Hall Recruiting Offico yesterday. These included men who had registered for service under the old system, and had been directed to como forward for attestation. The registered men are being summoned in batches, and are taken alphabetically, so that some timo may elapse before tho turn comes of men whose names begin with letters low down in tho alphabet. There is evidence already of the value of tho new system, requiring recruits to take tho oath at the time of registration, and so become soldiers of jibe' King at once.' . The lists for the next few Reinforcements "are filling at a, satisfactory pace, and the Defence authorities, for,the first time, can count upon getting into camp all the men who have offered their services. Any man who docs not answer the mobilisation call when it reaches him will rank -as _ a deserter, and -will be liablo to punishment accordingly. It appears, as was expected, that some of the men wlo had .registered under the old system are not willing Jo take the oath now. These men, who represent the class responsible for tho recent shortages, are taken off the registration lists when they do not come forward for attestation, and in this way the lists are' being gradually. purged, with the object of ensuring that every man upon them shall'be a bona-fide volunteer, ready to' go into camp at the timo stated by him when registering.
