At a sitting of tho Arbitration Court to-day Mr. Smith (Union Company) raised a quest-ion bearing on appreu; ticeship and the absence of "apprentices on compulsory 1 military service. Ho said that engineering apprcn ticca were compelled fivo years' apprenticeship to qualify to sit for an examination. It could not bo mot "by four, years' apprenticeship, . and ono year's military service. Judge Stringer: It is a very important, question. Legislation is tho only thing that can put the matter on a proper footing. Something might bo done under tho War Regulations. Tho only Court can do is to bring tho matter under tho notice of tho Government again, and ask if it is possible under the War Regulations to do something to meet theso cases. - Mr. Smith also referred to the timo spent oil compulsory military ; scrvico counting as part of the apprenticeship, pointing out the difficulties likely to arise if employers were compelled to pay journeymen's -wages for extra time spent bofore an employeo .could sit for his examination. It was. decided • that the Inspector of Awards and Mr. Smith should submit a statement of cases to the Court for interpretation.
