RECRUITING
, ■ _—« PROGRESS OF REGISTRATION , LOCAL ENLISTMENTS Forty-seven recruits were ' attested awl set'down for future Reinforcements at'tlio'Town Hall recruiting office yesterday. Tho majority of tlio , men had been registered previously "under tho old system, and presented themselves for attestation in accordance with tlic directions now being issued to the men on the waiting About twonty of yesterday's ,recruits were offering their services for tlio first' time. This number is above the averago, and it appears that tho heavy casualty lists published during the last few days have accclerated tho rate of reoruiting in Wellington to an appreciable extent. , The' number of registered men wiio had been directed to ..attend ,at tho Town Hall yesterday'for* attestation was 58. Of these 25 did nol appear, but. some of the missing men communicated* with tho authorities, and explained the reasons for their absonce.- They will be attested later. It is possible that some of the other absentees had not received their notices, owing to the addresses given by them at the time of their original registration'being insufficient. The notices are; sent' out as registered letters, and will be returned to the Defence Department within -a short period if the addressees cannot be traced. Four of .tho'men who came up for attestation. had to bo rejected on account'of their being- under age. ■*They had misstated their ages when filling up the registration"forms under t,he old system, but had to confess the truth when required,to take the oath. During the period September. 27 to October 2, inclusive, '106 men registered at the Town Hall .'recruiting office. s Of these. 66 were passed as fitjr. and 40 were rejected by tho examining doctors. The proportion of fit is higher than usual, but this is accounted for by the fact that some of "the men had ' been accepted previously, and had'merely' come forward'for attestation. ". . .
