GIRL "MORSERS"
FOUR SCHOOLS ESTABLISHED,
With the establishment of a school , for girl telegraphists at Auckland, tho "" 11,I 1 , and T. Department has planted a "Morse" seminary in each ot the cenj tres. Tho'latesfc school to be established was ill Auckland, where thirty promising girls are now hard at it learning the dot-dash alphabet, under the ( direction of Mr. W. It. Jv. Pulleng. This policy movement oil tho part of . tlio I', and T. Department was found to bo absolutely necessary, in view of , the thinning of staffs caused through the war. in addition to the many in ( the service who answered the call almost immediately, there were a number of young men coming 011 as telegraphists, who, as they reached mili- , tary age, have enlisted for service. Tho ] only alternative was to train girls to tho work. Though the idea is not a , uew one, tho training of girls in telegraphy has not in tho past been a policy measuro in tho Department, but after the results already achieved there can bo little doubt that the fenialo telegraphist is going to bo a fac.tor in official life for some years to come — if not for all time. The movement in Now Zealand is attracting attention in other countries. A lato Melbourne "Leader" had a large group picture of the Wellington girls' class, and a reference to the extending employment of girls in connection with telegraphic work. t In connection with the instrumental stafFs, Mr. It. L. Townseud has been, appointed instructor to tho boys' school at Wellington; Mr. J. C. Allan (of Hamilton) to the boys' school' at Auckland; Mr. W. W. Wilson'to the boys' school at Oaniarn; and Mr. J. J. McGregor to tho girls' school at din.
