NAVAL MEN ON LEAVE
WELCOMED BY THE MAYOR. ' His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. P; tuko) extended a very hearty welcome home to tlie men on leave "from the Pyramus and Philomel, when they arrived by the Wimmera yesterday morning. In the course of his remarks the Mayor stated that it' was a great pleasure to him to extend a public welcome' to the • officers and men repre--senting tlie British Navy m tlia Southera Seas. It was gratifying to know that' our boys were as truly British in all matters affecting the Navy as those lads from the United Kingdom. Ho did not say that our New Zealand , sailors were better thaii others of the Empire, but he did say, that with the opportunity" of doing definite work in aid of the war they had made-good. On the East Coast of Africa there were many New Zealanders, and the strain was exacting.' Not only were they unties fire on board, but they also were engaged in that grand work so dear to the boyo of the Navy, the work 'of a landing party, and engaged the enemy with signal success. He was pleased to see Mrs. Hall-Thompson present, and also the son of the Earl of Glasgow, and on behalf of the oitizens he expressed appreciation of the services rendered by Captain Hall Thompson and Captain the Earl of Glasgow, and by ftto officers and men under their command, and hoped the men would have a. pleasant, time with their own folk' tvhile on leave. The place of. reception was a Harbour Board , shed, which had been decorated for the. occasion by board employees, • to whom' Mr. Luke ©steaded his thanks,
