+ ■ PLACES FOR THE RETURNED MEN.

The number of returned soldiers on the register of the .Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as on Wednesday last was 5515. . The activity of the Department is indicated, by the fact that of tins number 4494 cases had been dealt with, 711 were under action, and 310 wore noet ready for action. The last group included men. in hospital, and those who had arrived by recent transports. The cases which had heen disposed of were classified as follows: —(a) Men who have work to return, and meti who have ro-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc., 1820,; (b) men placed in employment-, 1049; (c) men wlTo have signed "assistance not required," 1033 ;_(d) left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 142; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and wen who have accepted work the Department found for them, but failed to start work, 315; (f) men who- have drawn sections of land, 135: total, 4494. Regarding the cases in hand, 247 men were on the employment register awaiting suitablo openings. Inquiries tffu'e being made concerning 107 cases,, and the' Department was awaiting further advice reagrding 357 cases, including men who had stated that they were not yet ready for work. Many employers throughout tho Dominion have assisted the Department materially by giving preference to returned soldiers when they are making 'appointmnets. The officers of the Department dp not wait for employers to apply for workers; they are constantly on the watch for suitable openings, and'arc quick to represent the claims lof the returned soldiers whefl, that seems desirable. • ■■'
