'A meeting of tho Wellington Accountant Students' -Society was held on Wednesday, the president (Mr. E. W. Hunt) presiding.. The death, on active service, of . Mr. E. A. Morris, a member of tbo soiiety for many years, was the subject of sorno feeling remarks by the chairman. Ho also referred to tho loss sustained by Mr. ,D. T. Stuart, a former president, of his son,' A. M. Stuart. ' Mr. H. E. Evans, 8.A., LL.M., delivered a lecture ~on "Dividends and Profits.". Tho subject was dealt with in a most comprehensive mflnner, tho lecturer traversing the legal as laid down by the Statute, and leading cases. The responsibilities of , auditors and directors in tho direction of ensuring that dividends are only paid out of profits were emphasised. That it is no easy matter to decide what are truo profits was evidenced by the number of legal decisions referred .to by the lecturer. At tho conclusion of tlie address, Mr. Evans answered numerous questions, and subsequently he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
