HOROWIIENUA MEETING MASTER MOTJTOA WINS THljl. CUP. (By Our Special Reporter.) Tho Horowhenua meeting was hold .yesterday before a good crowd. Heavy rain fell at intervals during the day, but the racing track 'was not' affected, though the. lawns and enclosures became sloppy. The machine handled .£11,333, against ■£5754 for last year. K.'iiwhakahaere and Cron Park were iv.iiulrawn from the Hfl.clc Hurdles. The 1 k'ixt's wore very stiff, and several of the riders expressed the opinion that they were higher than any other place in the Dominion. Waimahaki was a good favourite, but he was lucky to score, as his'rider gave tho field a big start at tho barrier-rise, hut did well afterwards, and kept the fenoe the whole way. Over the last few yards he got up,, and beat The Golfer, who was tiring to nothing. The last-named is a great jumper, but that'is about all that can be said in his favour. Pikiho was a fair third. Montalvo fell at the second fence, and Worcester ran off.

The Moutere Haclc Handicap was a splepdid race, and the finish was close and exciting, Rongora getting up and winning after a very fast race. The pace set-suited tho Trentham mare, on whom W. Price rodo a.well-judged race. Pall Mall and Sir Wallace were out by themselvos, . witn Borsil, Detroit, and Rongora in tho rear, i Detroit went up fast across the bottom, but the effort was badly timed, although cloße up, he could not forestall tho late rnn of Bongora, whilo Sir Wallace also struggled on and beat him. Borsil was finishing fast in fourth place. > ■ There was a little orer M3OO invested on the machine in tho M'Donald Memorial Handicap, and of this sum the three-year-old filly Sweet ; Tipperary carried more than half. At tho barrier sho jumped out well. Tj6on led her for a couple of furlongs, when the Oaks candidate took charge, and her victory was loudly proclaimed; but Hushabye, who was iu receipt of 71bs., took charge. a furlong from home, and won decisively. It was no disgrace to the runner-up,, as she was conceding the winner two years and a liberal allowance of weight. The winner was neglected on the machine. Late in the afternoon a telegram was received from the-owners of Sweet Tipperary, asking for an inquiry into the running, but as it was not made, personally no action was taken.

Another field of five started in the Cup, 'and the machine saw Orleans (Oliver) as a good favonrito. He took the lead early, and over the first half there was no pace, but at the six furlongs it quickened. In the straight the favourite was still ahead, but Master Moutoa, who had the apprentice allowance, got up'in the last few strides, and won by a neck. Wiint, who is hardly ready, was close up third, and thou came Maniaroa. The winner finished well, but tho allowance was the deciding factor. The owner of tho' sccond horse appealed on the grounds that tho winner weighed in without a Spanish-martingale .which he carried in the race.. ' The Judicial Comimittoe dismissed" the appeal.' It is understood the matter will be taken to tho Racing Conference. Flying Spur. and. Bairnsdale were_ the favourites in the Levin Hack Handicap. The latter jumped out very smartly ( from Noi 1 position, and ridden a quiet race - in front, he lasted long enough to win by a length, v Need was-his-, companion for half a mile, but then faded out.of it. Sir Wallace finished fast on jthe feiice, and Narnur, who was ridden in behind, also shaped better usual. Flying Spur ran badly, and is evidently not himself.

Ladifv, Lady Frisco, ' and Kurapai were allowed to forfeit their engagements in the Ohau Hack Welter Handicap, for which. Silenns, Bronk Delava!, and Sir Fisher-wero evenly backed. The public were well on tho mark, for the trio participated. in a very fine finish, and the verdict went to the last-named by. a halflength, with Silenus the 6ame distance in front of Bronk Delaval. Eo'ngora was next. J. O'Shea, rider of the winner, was called before the stewards fnr crossing tho second' horse, but tho judgment was .not altered.

■' Speculation in the Maiden Scurry was practically confined to the Wellingtonowned Black Night, runner-up to Miss Do Val at Otaki, and Hupaua. Harem Skirt led.'for'a short distance, .when tlio favourite took charge, but across t tho bottom stretch Hapana ran to the front, and was well clear after going half, a (mile. She hold her own in the riin home, and won easily from tho favourite and Heni. The winner is one of Mr. E. Short's breedings and is trained by H. Barnett at Lovin. g Tho concluding event went to Worcester, with Jean Laddo in second place.
