ANZAC CLUBHOUSE AT FEATHERSTON
TO BE OPENED NEXT MONTH. Tho Anzao Club at Featherston, the building of which is now nearly completed, and which is to be officially, opened towards tho end of October, will be ono of the'finest institutions of its kind in the Dominion. The need lor such a place in Featherston was nover more apparent than at present,: when thore are about 9000 men in camp at Featherston and Tauhorcnikku.:. The patriotic and generous residents of South Wairarapa, who de-cided.-to establish the club, and who provided the money for its erection', are to be congratulated on the splendid accommodation they have provided for officers, 'n.c.o.'s, and men. Nothing appears to have beott overrated, ana everything in the Building is of tho best quality. The Anzac. Clubhouse ( . issituated close to the railway station on a corner site. Hie building, whioh presents a handsome appearance ,lrom tho outside,, is built of .wood/.on a : oonoreto ■foundation, and tho ,<wide steps loading ■up to - the numerous entrances aro of ;conorete. There is a main hall, finished in oiled firmi. _'At one end is a stage and near the stage the floor will be kept clear,- except-for chairs, so that concerts. can .be : held at any time. - At the other aid there will bo billiard tables and'lounges Bet 'at" a comfortablo anglo, and with inclined backs, tc> give a maximum amount of case. ■ A long counter, where light refreshments will be served, runs along oiie side. Leading from the main ball is a soldiers' reading-room, which will also be comfortably fitted; across the /passage is a room for n.c.o.'s, with a private bar to the buffet. ' This room 'will iiavo billiard tables, too. Lead-: ing 'from the n.c.o.'s room, and with a private entrance; at the side of the building, is the officers' room. 'In addition to facilities for reading, writing, resting, or recreation, these quarters are provided .with private baths' arid lavatories. 1 In this respect the n.c.o.'s and meii aTe also well, catered for, both plunge and shower-baths, with hot and cold water having been, installed, also a drying-room, in which a steady heat, will be maintained by' jneans of boilers situated in the basement. The whole building will be heated by hot-water radiators, and .lighted by. electricity, , special' plants being. provided in an adjoining en-. gineiouse. ' , No pains or expense aro being spared l to ,furnish and. equip the building in first-class stylel,. Already' there aro .three pianos standing in the,main hall, still unpacked from their cases, and' large quantities of comfortable chairs, and lounges. Tho Anzao Club, of Featherston should; be a favourite Jiauht for men in.khaki, on evening, leave. ■ , . . '
