NOTES AND COiMMENTS
!Bi Glencoz.l i. i . The annual meeting of the Horowhenua Racing Club-will be held on the Levin course to-day. Wellington patrons will have their choice of either the New Plymouth, express at 8.20 a.m., or the Napier express at 9.10' a.m. to travel by. Excursion faves will be availabe by both, trains. The field in the Hack Hurdles includes the Australian-bred The Golfer, but evidently he has not been a very high-class performer on the other side, as the toandicapper has only given him 131b. above the minimum. Waimahaki, runner-up to Combustion at Marton, is a good jumper, and may show up. Miss Kelly is the best of the beginners, and she may be found more reliable over fences than on.the flat. Rongma- and Detroit will both carry penalties if started in the Moutere Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, but the latter shaped so well at Otaki that he may again go out favourite. His owner is a steward of the club, and would like to be successful on his own course. In the M'Donald Memorial Handicap, Sweet Tipperary, 95t.,. is top weight. Providing she and Tyson leave the mark the race will be an interesting one, but they are both very erratic at the barrier, and' backers are taking the odds :to them leaving the barrier. Lady Louisa's form at Otaki was bad, and, though on her own course to-day, she will probably be neglected on the machine. Tangihou, runner-up last year, and Maniaroa, the winner, of the last Cup, are both in this year's field. Orleans is getting into shape with racing, and he may bo- favourite to-day. Master Moutoa and Want should both be better for the racing they had at Otaki, but backers will doubtless bear in mind the several important handicaps won by Orleans last season. Merry Andrew, a winner at' Otaki, has only been penalised 31b. for to-day's race, but tho distance is a furlong further, and the locally-owned' Bairnsdale may reverse the Otaki form. The Feilding horse, . Bronk Delaval, who dead-heated with Combustion in the Hack Welter Handicap last year, may be favourite in the same race' today. His form at Otaki behind Rose Pink was good, and the bay horse should be improved by the gallop. ' There is a big field in tho Maiden Scurry, five furlongs. Tho frequently placed Lady Edith may be favourite with Black Night and Westella, both of whom showed pace at Otaki, well in the market. Jean Laddo, runner-up to Goldstream in the Flying Handicap at Otaki, may command most support in the Wcraroa Welter Handicap. The annual meeting of members of the AVcllington Racing Club will bo held to-morrow evening.
There will bo racing at Geraldino today and to-morrow. Entries for all events at the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club dose with Secretary A. E. Whyto at 9 o'clock to-morrow night. Varnish, who won the Amberley Cup on Monday last, lias now scored four times in succession. Dcbonairo, who must be getting well on in years now, was successful in the Hunter'*' Hurdles' at tbe Bircliwood Hunt Steeplechase Meeting on Monday. He also filled the position of runner-up in the' Ladies' Bracelet. ■Regarding Kilboy, who will' represent Now Zealand in tho Derby at Binidiviclc on Saturday, it in stated that Messrs. H. Chisholm and Co. had sold the colt to.an Indian sportsman for 3000 guineas, and a contingency of half tho Dorby Stake. However, tho veterinary surgeon did not pa6S him as 6onnd, so the colt will race at Ttandwick solely in the interests of Mr. ,T. B. flcid. It'has always been understood that one of Kilboy'<3 tendons was wcuk, and probably this is the reason the certificate was withheld. Otaki winners havo been rchandicapped as follow at Horowhonua to-day:— Montoro Hack Handicap: Ttongora, BIJ>.; Levin Hack Handicap: Merry Androw, 311>.; Ohau Hack Handicap: ftonsrora. 51b. A Press Association message from Sydney states that 'Jiligiblo-'is still lame. Ho will return to New Zealand to-morrow. A. Press Association messago • from Sydney states that Kai Iwi. has been scratched for the'Ginicrack Stakes, and liridges for tho Metropolitan.
