OTAKI MEETING TAEINGAMUTU WINS THE STAKES. (Special Correspondent.) Otaki, September 2.5. The OtaJri meoting opened to-day in ideal weather, and before' a very largo attendance. Speculation was spirited, and when the machine closed for the day tho total was .£18,505 10s., as against ;£1(i,9?5 «t the corresppnding: meeting last year. Locally-trained horses practical!); swept tho programme, and their victories wcro fully anticipated except in tho cases of Rose Pink and Rongora, who paid big dividends. The racing was for the most part interesting. Taringarnutu won the big handicap by a narrow margin, and general surprise was expressed when she was pulled out again after an interval of ono hour and a half.
Polynesian inpnopolised the attention of backers in the Maiden Plate, but though she drew tho inside she did not jump out cleanly, and was one of tho last when' the field had gone a furlong. At this point Wcstella and Birkenetta were showing the way to Plying Spur l and Ayah. The t<vo last-named led into the-straight, but in tho run home the Trcntham filly had all tho'best of it, and won comfortably by three lengths. Polynesian finished well in third place, and then camo Black Lake, Quinn's Post and Westclla.
Hylatus, Ruakngata, and Glorify were missing when tha horses paraded for tho Dominion Day Handicap. Lady Frisco, Cleft and Kukri were backed in that order, but the favourite moved very in her preliminary, and after being Wl placed down tho back Bhe failed to finish on, and was well back when the post was reached. Cleft also got a bad run, and the rider of Haumakaka was "on tha carpet" to explain the incident. Bose Pink took onarge at the six furlongs,'and at the distance Bronk Delaval-looked like heading her, the light-weight ran on well and won by -three lengths. H'amnakaka and Kukri were tho next to finish. Critic was a good favourite in the Steeplechase, but ho turned oyer at iie first fence. Kew andi Marfan then raced in front together, but the latter ran off at the bottom, and tha double proved fatal to Ituarangata, Kew, and Happy Jack. Tauira then took the lead, and in trying to head him, Kiwitea nearly' fell, and eventually ran off. Kirkby jumped the last fence with Tauira, and in tho ru.n home his superior condition enabled him to beat the_ Mahaki gelding. Kew was a poor third. The winner scored on the same course in June. For the big handicap the betting waS wide. Gold Soult had a slight call over Lady Louisa, Master Moutoa, and Taringarnutu. At tho start the favourite was slow to move.Vand Orleans showed the way to Lady Louisa and Taringarnutu. Going out of the straight the stable companions, Sir Solo and Bed Kibbon, had taken charge, and led down the back, well clear of Gold Soult, Master Moutoa, and Taringarnutu. Sir Solo fell back at the half-mile, where Gold Soult moved up, and he had Eed Ribbon's measure entering the straight, but in the run home bo succumbed to a good run. by Taringarnutu, who was splendidly handled by, A. Peed. Master Moutoa, who had'been prominent throughout, finished third, and then came Orleans, Maniaroa, and Merrio Gain. Tho winner scored in tho Flying .Handicap on ■the same course last season. ■ Tho Stewards' Hack Handicap was an unsatisfactory-sort of race. The machine foretold that there was only one in it, and that one was Miss De Val. After jotting out badly she was soon up with tho leaders, being allowed ito get through on the fence. Spectual led her into the straight, but then Reed took 'her to the front, and from this point the race was all over. The performance of one of the well-backed candidates was most unsatisfactory, but it was not challenged by the paid officials. - • • Menelaus was bruited about on the course as the equal of Chakwana, so the public, accepting the tip, sent tho three-year-old out a good favourite for the Flying Handicap. He was badly placed at the start, but at, the homo turn was with the leaders. However, ho failed to finish on,, and was beaten out of a place. The unlucky performer of the race was Avon Park, who got badly stopped twice, and was nearly down ontering the straight. Hushabye was in behind Marimba as the field raced into the straight, but the pair' failed in the run home. ' Jean Laddo was in charge at tho distance, whero Goldstream and, Taringarnutu joined in, and after a great finish tho Porirua horse won by a length. Marimba was close up, and so was Botanist, who finished fourth. The winner did not score out of his turn, as ho was not successful all last year. ' The concluding event saw two very firm favourites in Lady Multifid and Bayswater well beaten. There was a lot of dolay at'the barrier, and when they settled down Miss Sation, Bayswater, and Lady Multifid were leading, with Hastie and Detroit prominent amongst the others. Lady. Multifid was on tho outside, and had all the worst of it in turn: , Entering the straight Bayswater was done with, and Detroit took "charge, but half-way down the running Borsil, Sir Wallace, and Rongora' rushed up, and in a great finish W. Price landed the Trentham mare a winner by a neck. This made the fifth success of local horses; while a Porirua representative in Goldstream also scored. Appended are details of tho racing:— MAIDEN.
