WANGANUI RACES
.CONCLUDING EVENTS. '' ' . -.-Bji Telegraph—Press Association. ' Wanganui, September 23. i ■ llagnilioent -weather favoured tho sec- : ond day's racing at ■ Wanganui. ■ There was a very large attendance. Tho totalisator handled ££1,% i, as ■ against .423,773 for the second day of last year. The total forthe meeting was ,£52,293, as against i>16,001 for last year. , Bivonao~was tho only withdrawal from the Owen Handicap, which was a good , betting Vace, there being very little difference between Miaoara, Greenstreet and Eangitiro. At tlie start' Miacara and Interlude led a bunched field, whilo Avon Park and Gcorgo were slow to move. Elation and Interlude wero first into the straight, vikero Miacara and George became prominent on the outside. , In a good finish Eangitiro got up and won by a neck, with. Elation a head away from Miacara. Lady Middleton was close up fourth. Tho' winner did not cot a good passage, and his victory Shows hint to be back to form. Greenstreet ; will be all the bettor for tho-racing sho is getting. " ' ' ■'. .. .' Tno consistent Gaycium, who seems to be improving with- racing, scored comfortably in tho Eailway Hack Handicap after being prominent throughout. Starengo was always, up with her, but in tho ond iho only boat Ecwa Ecwa by a head. Splcndant, who ( was a hot order on the machine,'was slow to move, and i after going round the . field finished \ fourth,,- Devotion boing up with him. 1 1 The last-named stripped very well, but was alow to'find her feet,,and was lucky " to get a good passago on tho rails at the finish. Carmel Arch was a good second favourite, but after being well placed, behind the leaders ho faded- out of it at tho turn for Jiome. Pidclio was scratched. For tho big Hurdles thero wore six runners. Pursenller and Golden March carried the bulk of tho investments, but each failed badly after having overy chance to win. Tho first day's winner, Vladian, again scored by a narrow margin from the consistent but unlucky Austin. Pursenller jumped out in front, but was hoisting signals of distress six furlongs from home. Hore Goldon MaToh rushed to tho front, but ho jumped very .wildly, and lost his position. Austin was in chargo at tho half-mile, but round the ""bond Vladian tackled 'him, and the pair left tho field. A good finish saw tho bay gelding prevail by a good \ necls. Cravrford and Pursenller .were next; Naupata ..whipped the field the whole way. The Steeplechase proved a good thing for Marton, who pullod to the front after jumping tho first fence, and was not headed again. • Tho Malachi gelding stood off his fences, and gained ground gt each jump. The bracketed pair, Critio and The Hound, Vero running prominently after the first doublo, where The Hound lost his rider. Critic was chasing' Marten the whole way, but though he got within. a half-length' of him at the finish it was only on sufferance. Nita was a poor third. Czaronus, who was heavily backed, lost his rider at the first fence. Eewi Poto and Hylatus/ wero the eleventh-hour withdrawals from tho Higgle Handicap. Nones was a screech7ng hot favourite, with Depredation next irf demand. At tho finish the latter beat tho southern ma.re by,a neck after a keen struggle. Down the back Moulu led from Depredation and Square Deal, but the first day's winner was going tie best, and took charge at tho distance. He was at once challenged by Nones, but the latter failed to- quite reaoh the Campfiro oolt. Square 'Deal was ahead of the rest, who wore bunched. Tho winner scored a meritorious victory, and he promises to be very useful on the Coast this 6eason. The imported Highden mare Revalenta was the only withdrawal from the Moutoa Hack Handicap, leaving a dozen runners. Hylatus was a good favourite, but <?overal of the others wore well backed. -v'ihet. gome delaj at.the barrier Black-
heart, Hylatus, and Antwerp jumped out together, but at the six furlongs post the last-named i was out by himself, and was not Hylatus mado a big effort over tho last two furlongs, but could not reach the loader. ' Dood was , a head in front of Toki, and then camo Analogue and Blackheart. The winner has been a costly horse to his connections, having been fancied on innumerable occasions, only, to fail badlyi Clift was well supported, but he drew: the outside, and was never dangerous. Toki ran a, good race, and will do better next time. Tho Marangai Handicap was only a five-horse race. Eewi. Poto was mado tho shortest price of the meeting, but he never looked like getting' beaten, and won very comfortably from .Welcome Nugget. There wero a couple tif breaks away at tho barrier, and after this tho starter dispersed with tho tapes. The Aucklandor Worcester jumped out well, but Eewi Poto took charge at the. halfmile, and after this tho issue was novor in doubt. Ho was being eased up from the distance, and had tho field in trouble for tho greater part of tho journey. Worcester had. every chants to win, but Marsinah jumped off badly, and did not get tho accustomed break. Tho curtain was with the St. John's Hack Woltcr, for which Gang Awa' was a good favourite. The Fordell representative won, but ho was lucky, as he only just caught and beat Bivouac, who had been in front tho whole way, whilo lady Multifid was only a head away after, being in the ruck till the distance was reached. Tho lastnamed appeared to bo unlucky not to score. At tho start Bivouuc went out by himself, and when, the field settled down Gang Awa' was running second, with , Struggle prominent amongst tho others. Gang Awa' was proclaimed a winner turning into tho straight, but Bivouac 6tuek to his work, and was; Only beaten on tho post. Following are tho results:—..
