ONLY SONS

SHOULD THEY BE CALLED UP LATER ON? Sir,—By to-day's Dominion; I see that Mr. Hughes (Australia) intends exempting only sons from compulsion, which soems quito fair; as many only sons who can be spared will bo only too willing to go to the front, while others whose duty it is to remain would never plead at an Exemption Board to perhaps bo ridiculed by their fellows. It is to be hoped our Defence Minister will seo this matter in the same light as Mr. Hughes. Why not leave only sons till the larger families are exhausted, and thon call them up? There is a case of a small farmer near, here who has a small milking farm. Tho parents are getting old and the son (only) attends to everything. 'These'old-people'will have to give up their home, and do not know what they will do. Hoping tho powers that be'will look into this matter and not take away the. support of parents getting on,in years,—l am, «tc., COCKATOO. . Palmerston. '
