THE TEPID BATHS
— 9 LOSfNG HEAVILY. On Thursday ovening the City- Council had before it the following report from its Finance Committee :— "That they had been ivaitcd on by n. (loputn-tion from the Boys' Institute, •including representatives from tho Amateur Swimming Association and the Royal Lifc-Sn-viiig Society, requesting tho council to assist the instituto in tho matter of tlicir present financial difficulty concerning tho tepid baths. Tho baths have resulted in a loss up to date of £120, and the total estimated loss for the year will be between £400 and £'130. The cause was considered to lie due primarily to the fact that so many swimmers have joined the Expeditionary Forces. The deputation asked, the. council to grant tho following :—(1) Water freo of charge for the current 12 months in the year hi lieu of 8 months-granted at present; (2) a subsidy of £200 to'tide thorn'over their present difficulties; (3) the right to placo ono advertisement in each of the tramway waiting sheds. "Tho committee -have lo recommend that tho first request, he acceded to, that the second request bo not entertained, and that tho third request bo forwarded to tho Tramways Committee for consideration." Tho report was adopted, and eo was a suggestion by Councillor W. 11. P. Barber that the baths should be allowed to open for only a portion of the day, 1 and thus save islaff cost.
