The Hon. W. H. Herries and tho Hon. A. L. Herdman returned from their visit to Wanganui yesterday morning. Tho Hon. CI. W. Russell went south to Christchurch last night. Ho returns on Sunday morning. A Press Association telegram from London states that Colonel tho Earl of Feversham has boon lulled in action. Tho Earl of Feversham was colonel of the Yorkshire Hussars. His heir is Viscount Helmsloy. Mr. E. C. Brownell, tho Y.M.C.A. national secretary, leaves Wellington by the midday express to-day for Auckland, where he goes to meet Mr. John J. Virgo,- the national field secretary the British National Y.M:C.A. Council. Mr. Virgo will arrive on Sunday and. will tour the island. i Major J. L. Sleeman, Director of Military Training, has returned from his visit to, the South Island, where he ,has been 'supervising the' instruction of the temporary sergeant-instructors iu both tho Otago and Canterbury dis--triots. These wero concentrated at Dunediit and Christchuvch. respectively, and were put through a comprehensive syllabus of instruction boforo returning to their commands; It is hoped to hold "similar, tours iu the Wellington and Auckland districts at an early date. Captain Guthrie, of Feilding, is an-1 other New Zealand medical practitioner w-ho has boon killed at tho front. He. was killed by a shell which struck the shelter that lie was in. Crawford, N.Z.G.A., havo' been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces' loug-servico medal. ■ Sergt. Robert Simiriers, of the Rifle .Brigade, mentioned as receiving the Military Medal, is a.son' of Mr. G. A. Simmers, formerly headmaster of tho Finiaru High School (states a Press A.s-i sociation message from Tiniaru). Sergt. Simmers enlisted at Danucvirke when employed in surveying work. Ho mentions, in a letter dated July 29, that lie took a patrol out at night to rescue a wounded man. His men wero hotly attacked. Five of thorn stuck it out for three hours, and finally supports and stretcher-bearers arrived, and tho wounded man was rescued. ■ Members of the Police Force stationed in'.bo Lambton Quay district,-mot last evening, and presented Constable M. A visitor to ' Wellington yesterday was Mr. Edgar Jones, of Timaru, and ..one time owner of "Mount Nessing," the well-known Canterbury estate. Mr. Jones has just returned from England, where lie has resided for tho last three years and' a half. Ho left for Timaru by the' ferry steamer last evening. Mr. Harold A. Bowden, touring manager for Messrs. J. and N. Tait, is at present in Wellington making arrangements for the firm's "Peg o' My Heart" season.
