HIGH FOOD PRICES IN BRITAIN
GOVERNMENT MEASURES DE-' FENDED.. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London,/ September 21. Mr. W. Runciman (President of the Board of Trade), replying to the resolution passed by the Poplar council protesting against the high food prices, claims that the Government has taken practical' measures to deal with the problem, and instances its control of the frozen meat trade. The Government prevented prices soaring to_ great heights, but could not bo blind to the fact that ill-conceived and artificiallyfixed prices might easily create an actual shortage. Broadly speaking, the Government could not control the world's price. No other country, had jlone so far as Great Britain to interfere with food supplies except Germany. Prices for food in Germany had risen to over 117 per cent., in Austria 149 per cent., and in Britain 65 per cent.
