ABOUT ; OPOSSUMS

* MINISTER REPLIES TO CRITICISM. ' The Minister of Internal Affairs has' boon freely criticised; in Auckland concerning tJic liberation of opossums in the Auckland district. The Minister made a reply tb these criticisms yesterday which is' ol some general interest. . "The information in the hands of the Department," said Mr. Ilusscll, "clearly indicates that it is not desirable that opossums should bo liberated iu fruit districts 1 . They are, however, capablo' of being niad'e a most valuable asset in btisli districts. Not only is tlio skin of the opossum n marketable commodity, but it is 0110 of considerable value, ranging from 14s. to 21s. .'bid there is an assured market for these skins. If liberated in tho back-blocks districts they are likely to prove a welcomo source of income to the bush settlor in the earlier days of his occupation. The information we have is that these opossums do not injure grasses or feed that is required for stock, as they live upon shoots and leaves of trees. Ju one hush district in tHe South Island £60.000 worth of skins were obtained in one. year. Provided the animals are confincd to bush districts, thero seems to me to bo no reason whatever why they should not be extensively distributed throughout tho. North'lsland."
