Mrs. Fisher was closely connected with civic works, the Mayor said, she being the wife of one who was for some years Mayor of the City, and who in his time was concerned in the introduction of important City, works which were a credit to him. It-was reported at yesterday's meeting of-the Wellington Hospital, Board that Dr. D. S. Milne had taken up the ' duties of house surgeon, vice Dr. Scoular. '. , Councillor W. Veiteh was, welcomed , / baok to the City Council table evening after a trip to Australia. ' The Matron of the Wellington' Public Hospital (Miss Frances Keith Payne) has resigned. Yesterday -the board dealt with her resignation, which was in the following terms:—"With muoh regret I give you my resignation; to-day after service of over 20 years. My health has not been good for some time past, and I find that I am unable to carry oa the work here as it should be'done. It has been very strenuous, and since my last severe illness I liavo felt that the time has come to leave. If you can see your way to relieving mo at an early date I shall be most gratoftil." The chairman of tho board (Mr. H. Baldwin) said .that the retirement of Miss Payne meant a loss to tho community, to the patients, and the nurse? (now in positions in various parts of the Dominion) whom she had trained. He moved that the resignation should be accepted with regret, aiid tlia.t the matter of suitable recog- 1 nition of Miss Payne's services should be referred! to the Hospital Committee. Besides .endorsing the remarks of the Chairman, Mr. C. M. Luko said that the training*- nurses had receive^ in the Wellington Hospital was so good that the institution had trons for hospitals right from Auckland to the Bluff. Rev. Mr. Van Stavereu moved that Miss Pnyne should be' granted one yoar's salary (£250), but tho board, adopting Mr. Baldwin's motion, decidod to eend the matter to the Hospital Committee.
