CULTIVATION OF NATIVE PLANTS
A strong deputation, organised by the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society, waited on the Mayor yesterday afternoon, and urged the desirability of setting apart portions- of the Botanical Gardens for the cultivation of Native plant-s. '■ Mr. Treadwell, president of the society, outlined the proposed scheme, and. was strongly supported by Mr. Hutchens, the South African forestry ay-' pert, Mr. Field, M.P., Dr. L. Cockayne, and Mr. Wak'eman, of Pahiatua. ■ The Mayor, in sympathetically reply" ing to the deputation, mentioned the splendid work that was being done by tho Reserves Committee, under thoguiding hand of Councillor Frost. He assured the deputation of his sympathy with tho movement, but as tho matter possibly required a chango of policy, he invited tlio deputation to approach him again when tho attendance of the chairman of Reserves, the Citv/Etminiior. and the superintendent of the Botanical Gardens could bo assured.
