THE TURF

4 NOTES AND COMMENTS (Br Glmjcoe.l While riding a gallop at Hastings last week, L. Wilson got a bad fall, but he soon recovered, and- hopes to be in the saddle at Wanganui io-day. Tho sprint' meoting- of the Wanganui Jockey Club ivill cornmenco to-day. I'ho weather is fine, and somo good, racing may be looked for. Tho principal event is tho Wanganui Guineas, in which there will be soven runners. Hyttus, who showed such good form at Awap'uni in tho autumn, looks fairly forward, and may go out favourite. lie is fractious at the barrier, but if he gets away well ho is such a smart beginner that he must beat a big advantage at tho turns, compared with Good Hope, whoso form last season was good, but the Chokeboro colt may not be suited on tho Wanganui course. Ceaso Fire is a good filly, but has not been doing; well lately, though she pleased her trainer by the way she moved at work yesterday morning'. Bjorneborg had a race at Avondale, but if he is to win to-day he should havo shown up with 7st. 31b. at Avondale. Hyttus may be favourite, and the support seems justified. The Porirua horses, Naupata and George, are at Wanganui, but their acceptance was missed for the first day, and they will not race till Saturday. / At Wanganui yesterday Chakwana did the best gallop, and although her rider took her over the shortest course she may start favourite to-day. The mare looks on tho big side, but Trentham track watchers say she has done plenty of work, and it must be remembered that she ,won at her first outing last .season. PanimiTO, the top weight, looks Hardly ready, and it will be no surprise to find him beaten, for he is not a good begin, ner, and his rider will want to get a lucky run on the fenoe to catch good beginners like Chakwana, Tyson, and Interlude. Tho two last-named may be troubled to get the distance in first-class . company. In tho Maiden Eaoe the best supported may be Wrestler, who showed wonderful pace in his two outings as a two-year-old, and should be quite at homo amongst tho lesser class he will meety ; to-day. He will be ridden by C. Emer- ' eon.. Form points to Leonla, in the Okehu ; Hurdles, but it will not be an easy thing ; ('or the big Conqueror gelding, and the evergTeon Pursefiller' and the lightly. ; weiyhted: Crawford ' may both take a lot of beating. In, tho Hack Hurdles, that gay deceiver, Golden March, will again receive considerable support, but unless he shapes up to his private reputation, which makes him a lot better than his public form, Austin, and Combustion may defeat him. The latter won at his first start at Marton, snd 6houild do a lot better to-day. ' For the Putiki Hack Handicap, si* furlongs, Devotion and Starengo may be tho best backed. Tho Gisborne'gelding. Gayciuni, who scored a surprise win at Marton, went very well on the tracks yesterday, and may repeat his Marton form, though Starengo has only got t« Improve a little to-defeat him, as he is meeting him on rnuoh better terms to, day. Nones does, not look ready, and should be at a good price in tho Spring Handicap, the choice for which < may lie De,, prodation (E. Reed), who is very well handicapped; Sedd el Bahr, who will come in for support on account of hia good showing in the Winter Cup; and Square Deal, who is well forward. The two top-weights, Moulu. and Zola, look a better olass than the rest in the concluding event.
