TAUHERENIKAU CAMP
——♦ ■ INSTITUTE ERECTED IN TWO DAYS. The Salvation Army lias accomplished something out of tho ordinary this week in connection .with their work among the troops. When the Nineteenth Reinforcements wont info camp at Tauherenikau tho Salvation Army Chaplain, Captain Bladin, was promptly on the scono and erected a large marquee capable of seating about three hundred men, and fitted up with facilities for writing, piano, games, etc. Being tho only one of its kind on the ground for some time, it was a great boon to the men, but in a heavy gale the marquee was damaged beyond repair, to tho great disappointment of the men. The chaplain within a day or so had other marquees erected, which have been in constant use ever since, and have been a groat comfort to the mon who gather there in large numbers nightly to write letters, play games, and enjoy a sing-song. The men have greatly appreciated 'the efforts of the Army chaplain, so much so that without his knowledge and entirely at their own suggestion they took up a collection among themselves, and to his great surprise.handcd him over £25. Among the messages received by the chaplain was one accompanying a collection of £8. An extract from this, referring to the donation, reads:— 1 "Wo wish you to accept same as a mark of appreciation for interest shown in, and comforts provided for all, under every condition; especially do we allude to the expeditious ■ manner in which your people provided a fine marquee for the uso of our troops in Tauherenikau military camp, and wo regrot the loss you must have suffered through damage to the same by wind. —I am, sir, very sincerely yours', for A Company, "(■Signed) .T. ROTCDOK COAT.KS, Captain, O.C. A Company, ]9th." The chaplain has had to work under great disadvantages with the marquees in the recent boisterous weather, so last week the Salvation Armv authorities decided to erect a building. This was no sooner decided unon than the materials were all brought on to the ground, and with the permission of the Camp Commandant a fatigue party was arranged, and in the surprisingly short period of less than two days these men, under tho direction of tho Salvation Army Property Department, erected a comfortable large building, nicely fitted up, and large enough to accommodate four hundred men.
