HONOUR THE BRAVE
' VIOTOEIA COLLEGE SCHEME. A proposal is to bo made to' tho Senate of the Now Zealand University at tho November moeting, that a complete roll of honour of graduates and undergraduates, of the university should bo compiled. The originator of tho scheme is Mr. H. F. A r on Haast, in whose name a motion stands. Tho different University College Councils have been asked for their opinions on the proposed scheme. A'ictoria Colleco Council referred it to .a joint committee, and tho report of that committee, which follows, was before the council last night:— ' Tho committee met on September 7. Them was a full attendance of representatives, two from each of the following bodies: The Colleen Council, the Professorial Board, the Graduates, the Students' Association. Communications were, received from Auckland College Council, which does not at nres"iit propose to support Mr. A r on Haast's scheme; from Otaw University, which is supporting the scheme. After careful eonsioVration and considerable discussion, tho committee resolved to recommnnd: (1) That Alctoria Universitv College should have' its own memorial. (2) That any such memorial should take some pormanent form. (3 1 ) That a building would be a suitable form; and suggests either a wing on tho north side to accommodate the library, or a hall. (4) That if the memorial takes this form, the roll of honour should be therein, and suggests that the universitv ho invited to erect such tablets, instead of carrying out M'\ Von' Haast's suggestion. The committee came to these resolutions on the following grounds:—First, that the mpmorial ought to be of some moro permanent and impressive form than that proposed bv Mr. Von Haast. Second, tli.it. ifr. A r on Haast's proposal would be difficult to carry out in a satisfactory way, and that in a short tinio it would be lost sight of. Finally, that each college could make a more direct appeal in its own district for its own momorial. The council adopted the Tpport, but some of the i"fimbers. notably Professor Banking TSmwn, expressed doubt as to whether the college could ever ret the money necessary +o carry out the proposal outlined. The sum required would be not less than -£5000.
