By mail this week firms in the Old Country give freight rates at 117s. 6d. pud 120s. to *he Dominion.' This was for lines that before the'war'cost 38s. od. per ton measurement. . Lines of hardware formerly paying freight at the rate of S7s. 6d; to 40s.'per ten are now costing 117s. 6d. Freights are a little easier from New York, although still very high. ' Soon after the outbreak of war the freight rates from New York to New Zealand jumped to £10 per ton. Advice received by mail this week gives ,the freight at 183s. per ton. It would seem as if further advances in-freight are expected as one firm writes to its jigent: <'We aro making-a vigorous pro£es% against a further advance in . freight rates,"
