21st REINFORCEMENTS

MOBILISATION BEGUN

WELLINGTON'S BIG SHORTAGE

ADDITIONAL RECRUITS REQUIRED AT ONCE

• The mobilisation of the Twenty-first Reinforcements, which include the men required to cover the shortage in the twentieth Reinforcements, was begun yesterday. Ttio drafts from the Wellington Military District went into camp at Trentham and Feathorston during the day, and the reports already available show a shortage of more than 270 in the infantry. There are also small shortages in the Mounted Rifles and * Engineers. Tlio Auckland draft will reach camp to-day, the Canterbury draft on Thursday, and the Otago draft on Friday. The infantry shortage in the Wellington Military District was made up as follows:— Short-

Four of the mon sent into camp were rejected as medically unfit, and Group o (Wellington City and Suburbs) sent in eleven additional men during tho day, making the net shortage 273. Thefigures may be subject to slight further adjustments. The number of men required in Group 5 for all branches was 239, and a net shortage of 75 was made up as follows :—

Tho shortage was due entirely to tho failure of registered men to answer tho mobilisation call. A sufficient number of recruits appeared on the books of. the Group Office, and the authorities had taken tho precaution of calling up more men than were actually required. But a substantial proportion of the men did not make good the undertaking expressed' in their registration forms. The men required to cover the shortages are to be sent into camp on Tuesday riost, and registrations for the suplementary draft are now being taken. Any man who wishes to get into camp promptly can register during the present week, and enter camp on Tuesday. Tho Defence authorities hope that some of the registered men who have caused the shortage by their failure to answer the call will come forward and help to fill tho vacancies. It has been the practice previously bo send additional men into camp day by day for a few days after a shortage had been reported, but this system was inconvenient, and involved serious interference with camp arrangements. No more men will be taken before Tuesday next, when an effort will bo made to complete tho draft.
