— « AN INDUSTRIAL AGREEMENT. Tlie Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. H. Haggar) was engaged yesterday in considering a dispute between tho Australasian Institute of Marino Engineers and tho owners ot the smaller coastal vessels. Recently an agreement was arrived at between the institute and the shipowners with respect to tlio pay and conditions of engineers on coastal vessels generally. An increase of pay was obtained, and the present caso was Tiled with a view to obtaining an industrial agreement for tho lower deck officers of vessels of under 100 liorse-power. Mr. J. M. Dcck represented tho owners yesterday, and Mr. T. R. AYallaco appeared for tho institute- Tho principal point in dispute was wages, tho claims comparing as follows with the present rates:—Cliiof engineers, under 20 h.p. £22 10s. per month (at present £21), 20 to 40 h.p. £24 (£22), 40 to GO li.p. £24 10s. (£22- 10s.), 60 to 100 h.p. £25 (60 to 80 h.p. £23, 80 to 100 h.p. £23 10s.); second engineers, £19 (£l7 10s.) ; third, £16 10s. (£ls 10s.). Prorision is'made also for victualling allowance, fourteen days' annual holiday, and otlier conditions. After discussion a. complete agreement was arrived at on the basis of tho olaims made.
