. ♦ PROPOSAL BY THE MINISTER. . A proposal to extend the St. Helens Homes scheme was mentioned by the Minister of Public Health yesterday. "With a view of bejping to reduce ■the oost of living," said 31x. Russell, "the Department is now considering tho desirability of extending wherever possible the St. Helens Homes scheme. At these homes the fee is £1 (10s. per week, which covers the entire cost of maintenance, medical attendance t andnursing. I think it may be desirable that the scheme Should be extended, and brought undor the notice of Friendly Societies. _At present the accommodation is limited to those -in receipt of incomes of not more than £4 per week. With a view of extending the system the Department intends to address a circular letter to all hospi.tal boards inviting them to' consider tho advisability of establishing maternity wards in their hospitals. In this way the scheme may be extended throughout New Zealand."
