V The Hon. G. TV. Russell arrived back from the south yesterday morning. Dean Walter Williams, of the School of Journalism of the University of Missouri, and first president of the Press Congress of the World, hopes to visit this Dominion either before or after the next sessions of the congress at Sydney. Mr. R. TV. Dal ton, the British Trade Commissioner, is a visitor to Auckland. The Rev. Father Herring, of Wellington, is at present visiting Auckland. Mr. Win. Joliffo, the Chief Parliamentary Law Draughtsman, retired from that position on Saturday, and will take up his duties as censor of moring pictures to-day. Sergeant C. C. Mar.sack,-son. of SubInspector Marsack, has bqpn promoted on the field to 2nd lieutenant. He has been transferred to the 3rd Battalion, New Zealand Riflo I'rigade, iu which his younger brother, Cyril, is a sergeant. , A private cable message was received from England on Saturday recording the death of Sub-Lieutenant Victor Abbott, of the Royal Flying Corps, through tho breakdown of an aeroplane engine whilst _ he ivas flying in England. Sub-Lieutenant Abbott was the only son of Mr. M. Abbott, of Battle Hill, Pahautanui. It was only in April last that the young man left for England, and his father received" a- letter from him a few days ago notifying that he had gained his commission m tho Flying Corps, and the nows of his death naturally came as a, shock. The deceased, who was twentythree years of age, was well known in tennis circles, having ou one 'occasion won the Singles Championship of the Manawatu district. In additiou to the transfer of Mr. Chas. Hill, chief postmaster at Oamaru, to Timaru, there are several other changes in prospect m connection with the 'Oamaru I'ost Ufßco staff Mr. F. J. Brooker, district accountant, lias received notice to transfer to Wellington, and Mr. T. C. TViggs, of the money order department, is expected shortly to be transferred to tho Capital City. Captain Donald Simsoii, who has interested himself so energetically on behalf of returned soldicrsj is to be farewell ed in the Mayor's room at 3 p.m. to-day. v The Rev. Father Dore, M.C., chaplain to the New Zealand Forces, who was wounded on Gallipoli, and was generally described as "the gallant Father Dore," is returning to New Zealand, and will arrive at Port Chalmers at the end of tho month. It is leared that Father Dole will not legain the use or one of his legs. Mr. TV. A. Scott, postmaster at Culvordeu, is under orders to transfer to the position of postmaster at Amberley, and will be leavirg Culverdon this week. His placo is being taken in the meantime by Mr. Black, of tho Christchurch office, but it is understood that Mr. Chambers, also of_ the Christchurch office t is bfing appointed to the vacant position at Gulverden. Mr. Morton Bird, a member of tha, traffic and accountancy staff of tha Union Company's head office at Dunodin, lias been promoted to the position of chief clerk at tho company's Gisborne branch.
