A private of a.Weish Regiment talked with admiration and envy of the Bodies' dug-outs. "They are better than our homes," he said. "I.only wish I had'anywhere so comfortable to live in. As for the cement earthworks, yon could sec shells bouncing on them like footballs." This battalion had taken a major prisoner who could not conceal his surprise at our success. "If you can break through here," he said, "thero's not a placo iii the lino where you. can't break through. ITo had been at Verdun, and during the bombardment had wished himself back there. Then lie added with a nolo of despair, "Why'don't you go on and finish the business now? The Germans are yood fighters to the last ten yards," paid a sergeant from Berkshire, "but the;,-' wim-'i- fight then. Of all the men wounded in my battalion only two had bayonet wounds. Bht their machine-guns were terrible. He's very cunning, and ho has his .tunnels from the first to the second line so that lie can d-rag his machine-guns .about ,md use them in either. You think you are all right and then they begin to play 011 you from behind. Some of the prisoners told 11s they had loen brought there from Verdun for a rest! We've had to stand many a bombardment without .getting anything back, hut this time it was our turn."
