THE WEEKLY STATISTICS. 1 The following progress statement of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as at September 12 is the Minister in Charge of the Department (the Hon. »A., L. Herdlnan): —' Total number of mon on register: (a) Disposed of, 4112; (b) under action, 945; (c) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transport®),_43B. T0ta1—5495. Particulars showing how 'cases dealt with: (A) Cases disposed of: (a) Men who have work to return toj and men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc., 1658.; : (b) men placed in employment, 986; (c) men who have signed "Assistance not required," 995; (d) left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 135; (e) men who have not,, responded., to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them, but failed, to start' work, 204; (f) men who have drawn sections of land, 134. Total-4112. (B) Cases under action: (a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 173; (b) awaiting further advice (including men who have stilted that they nro not yet ready for work), 462; (c) at present on employment wanted register, 310. Total —945. (C) Cases not ready for action: Men convalescing, not ready for employment, and not vet discharged by tho military authorities, 438. Tlio Carl lloea Opera Company, ,a fixture of Knglisb musical life lor past, rccontly' lost its cliiof conductor, Walter van Noorden, by death. His brother, Alfred, succeeded him, and Arthur Fagge, of tlio London Choral Society, also lias been engaged as a conductor. Arthur Winckwortli has become artistic director of tlio company, and Mrs. Carl ltosa has been added to the board of directors. The principal delight of General .Totfrc, so asserts a biographer, is to listen to or participate in music in his hours of relaxation. Tlio general's wife is an accomplished pianist, and bo himself lias an. agreeablo baritone voice and a thorough knowledge of the French classic repertoire. i
