ON THE CANAL
WITH THE NEW ZEALAND FORCES. Tho following are extracts from letters received from Mr. I l '. H. Wilkinson, M.A., Y.M.C.A. Field Service Secretary with New Zealand Forces in Egypt':— "Life still wags on the same as ever except that it is daily growing hot: ter.The Y.M.C.A.' work out here continues to extend. There, will shortly •be four or five marquees out from this railhead. At- the outset I was tho first, and am still, the ; furthest -out from tho rail. Canteens arc quite a regular part of our work out this way, and it means a lot to the men to be able to get a little fruit, biscuits, uiilk, etc., as a change from their ordinary diet, and tho marquee is, 1 believe, the coolest place in tho whole camp. I have just been over to the hospital distributing cigarettes and Testaments and having a yarn hero and there with the clians. On Sunday tho canteen is not opo'n, but wo put out an urn of lime-juice witli k donation box alongside. Last Sunday it evened out oxactly, and that is great when one remembers that we sell the lime-juice with practically no margin. From my own tent, as 1 write, I can hoar tho Is. 2d. piastres drop into the bos. If people want to know how to help, you tell them to send to tho men the things that liavo a home touch about them, home-mado tt.ffeo or jam (not marmalade), or Encks or shirts. Soon' folk will need to get wintor things ready again."
