NOTES AND COMMENTS

!Br Glenooe.l j Entries for all evonfs at- the Spring Meeting of the Napier Packing Racing Club closo to-night sit 8 o'clock. Iu connection with the Spring Meeting of the Hawke's Bay' Jockey Club, owners and trainers arc reminded that nominations for all events closo to-night. The Avondalo Jockey Club's Meeting wijl be concluded to-morrow. Tho Ashburton Mooting will bo brought to a conclusion tO-day. The Menschikoff gelding, Powder Fo.v, who has been off tho scone lor a considerable timo, is again in training at 1:0vin, and is an inmato of H. Barnett's stables. Tho now owner of tho bay gelding purchased him for .£ls. Tho thoroughbred sire, Gold Crest, is again to stand the season at Levin. Mr. Lindsay Jl'Donald. tho well-known amateur horseman,, is now tho solo owner of the ohestnut horse. ■ Special train arrangements hare boen made in connection with tho Otaki meeting to be hold on September 25 and 26.

A horse train will also run from Wnnganui to Otaki on September 24. Acceptances for the Wanganui and Obiki Meetings close on Monday next, Tn reference to tho long letter which the Otago District Committee forwarded to the president of the conference, ro tho Redshire case, the latter lias replied through tho secretary of tho conference, stating that he does not consider it open to enter into a controversy as to tho conduct of an appeal case. •

' • The surprise of tho Avondale meeting was the good return given by Tararu Jack, who scored in the Hurdles. On his form at Riccarton tho winner was much superior to Tenacious, who 6tartcd favourite.

It may not be generally known that, but for mero ohance, Fifinella, tho best three-year-old ill England to-day, would nover have been born. A writer in a London print states that Silver Fowl, whom 'Mr. E. Hulton purchased at the close of her two-year-old career for 1500 guineas, after sho had won good Taces in Ireland, did no good in England, and when she was badly injured by running into some barbed .wire at five' years old Mr. Hulton ordered her destruction. Mr. It. Wootton, however, persuaded Mr. Hulton to five Silver Fowl a chanco in the paddock, with the result that she recovered, and bred some good performers, including the New Derby and New Oaks winner—Fifinella.

Judging' by the response tho Horowhenua Club has received from owners, it is questionable if the club is adopting a wise policy in racing right on top of the Wanganui and Otaki Meetings. Thero are only eight entries for the M'Donald Memorial Handicap, five furlongs, ami ten in tho Wereroa Welter Handicap, and one moro in the Cup. Most of tho entrants are engaged at tho two meetings named above, and after they havo competed their owners may not feel like racing them at Levin with only a day's spell. If tho Pahiatua and Dannovirke Clubs can put through eight and teu thousand pounds without racing in the-same week as other clubs, surely tho Levin Club could do tho same.

-Mr. 11. Whitney has engaged Rumania and Rose Pink at tho Kurow Meotings, and ovidontly tho pair are intended to make tho southern trip. However, there are the Wanganui, Otaki, and Horo-whenua--fixtures' in front of thorn first, and after racing at these meetings their owner might abandon the southern trip.

.• A pictorial number par excellenbe is the verdict on this week's number of tho "N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review." An interesting scrios shows the ingenuity of tho French, soldiers,' and the way their interests are guarded in their country. Incidents on the Western front are also featured, and the New Zealand Roll of Honour is supplemented with another gallery of portraits.. Other illustrations to arrest geneTal attention are comprehensive snapshots oon'cerning the Auckland Gun Club's opening shoot; Pakuranga Hunt Club's races; the recent, race meetings at Martori and Danhevirke; racehorses; and the Higgins patent starting barrier. Attractive stage portraits and a miscellaneous selection of 'photographs make up an exceptionally good issue.—Advt.
