FIRES

Shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in a building of two stories in Devon Street, used as a shop and dwelling by Mrs. Margaret Parsons and owned by Major Hall] of Johnsonville, who is now at tlie front. The Fire Brigado suppressed the flames after considerable damage had been done to the shop and onb of the living rooms and their contents. The remainder of tlio premises and coi> tonts were damaged by heat and smoke. It is believed that the outbreak was caused through sparks from ono of the fireplaces being scattered by the high wind. The insurances aro: Building. £400 in the Commercial Union 'office; stock. £130 in tlio Victoria Company; and furniture, £70 in the Ocean office.
