NAVY LEAGUE

A meeting of the Executive Committee was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. J. B. Harcourt occupied tho chau, and there were present: Colonel' G. F. C. Campbell, and Messrs. C. R. Smith, R. Darroch, C. W. Palmer, and Barry Keesing. Mr. Smith reported on the work done by the sub-committee to promote increased membership. Tho appeal to the public has met, with some response, and amongst a number of applications for enrolment were two for life membership. Mr. J. P. Firth, Wellington College, wrote that "he did not quite understand why lie should receive a circular letter, as he had always been a member of the league, but as ho was hip and thigh, tooth and nail, in _ accord with the object of the Navy League, and as ho believed that the action of tho league had been productive of much good, to prevent any mistake in the future, he forwarded his cheque for £10 10s. to make him a life member."

With regard to the proposal to form a Ladies' Auxiliary Committee, Mr. Smith also reported that the ladies had already held a meeting, and steps were well forward to secure the assistance of a very valuable body of lady workers in the interests .of the league. A message was received from His Excellency "the Governor, stating ; that he would give his patronage to the celobrations on Trafalgar Day. It is intended that the celebrations should be held for the purpose of commemorating the success of the Allies' fleets. A subcommittee was set up to interview. Messrs. Hayward, with tho object of arranging a 'special picture programme lor school children during the after-, noon. The same committee will take steps to prepare for a suitable demonstration in the Town Hall during tho evening, when a collection will be taken up for the French Red Cross Fund. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for September 26. A resolution of condolence with win widow of Mr. D. M'Kellar in her recent bereavement was passed. Air. D. M'Kellar had been a member of tho executive for a great number of years, and bad always rendered very valuable services to the league.
