CONCERT AND SWIMMING CARNIVAL
On Monday evening an important meeting was convened by the Wellington ' Boys' Institute ,to consider the best means of raising money to make up the deficit in connection with' the swimming bathsl Mr. G. A. Troup (president of tho institute) pointed out that when'the Management Committee of the institute decided.to erect tho baths in Tasman Street, they did not expect to be confronted with the great European conflict which is now raging —a fact which lias' mitigated against tho success of the. baths, for the simple reason that many of.the young men who have gone to the front would have patronised the baths, and greatly contributed to its success. As matters now stood, a substantial deficit had to be faced, and it was eventually agreed upon that a concert and carnival be held on September 2G and 27, and an effort made to at least wipe out £150 of tho deficit. The first part of tho programme will lie a.concert, which should lie somewhat of a novelty in tho baths, and the latter part will bo a swimming carnival. A number of the best artists in Wellington have already offered their services gratis. Tho following committees were appointed: —Reception Committee, Mesdamcs J. R. Gibbons (convener), Bruce Christie, J. Hislop, Miss Wallace, Messrs. 11. Pearson, L. T. Watkins, G. E. Brown; Swimming Programme Committee. Miss Nolan,, Messrs. AV. C. Collier, A. A. Somerville, A. M. Farnall and T. Shields; Concert Committco, Mesdamos F. I'opo, A. Wilson, Holdsworth, L. T. Watkins, G. A. Troup, Messrs. G. E. Brown and G. A. Troup. A committee was also appointed to arrange tho selling of sweots and flowers on tho evenings of tho carnival.
