■' NOTES ON THE RACING. By v Telegraph—(Special Correspondent.) Pahiatua, September 13. The Pahiatua meeting was held to-day in very wild and wet weather. A howling gale blew all day, and half, way throughNthe carnival the rain fell in torrents. Backers of tho favourite had a royal day, five first selections scoring, while the second favourite won twice.
All started in the Haok Hurdles exI cept Fond Memory and Cron Park. The top-weight, Jem, was a good favourite, and ho pulled his backers through, but tho way was paved for him by Sarbonito carrying half the field off (ho course at tho bottom of tho straight. Jem took chargo after going a mile, ajid won nicely from Kirkby. Keynote, and Seneitivo were tho. next to finish. A. Ward,' rider of Janitor, was fined £2 for continuing on in the race after missing a'fence. Tho' investing public was well on the mark in tho Maiden Handicap, when four horses were selected, and they filled the places, though not in the order the machino suggested. The winner, Teka, is one of It. Gooseman's charges, and is by Mystification from Tattle. He only got up in the last stride, and won by half a head from Lady Edith, who had-been in front tho whole way. Tho.Opaki filly, Black Lake, was close up third, and then came /Vacuum. ' .'• Lady Frisco, BorsjJ, and Maisia Bell were the defections from tho Welter ■Hack Handicap, which was an even betting race, five of tho runners boing well backed. At the start, Comment, Discussion, and Trickery were prominent, but at tho back Comment went out by herself under a strong pull. Eirijig Line ran to her oh the bottom bend, but entering too straight tho field bunched up, and in a good finish Glorify, Discussion, Maraetotara, and Kongora, were prominent. The Marton gelding, who is greatly improved, won by .a half-length from Eongora, who was a neck to tho good of Maraetotara. Commont should do a lot better at her next staTt.
Thcro wore five runners in tho his handicap, Merrio Gain carrying most money. She began smartly, but Rumania scon overhauled her, and though he covered a lot of ground he took charge at the halfmile, and won on the bit. Merrio Gain was hard ridden in the straight, but could mako no impression on the leader. Wolconie Nugget was in third plccomost of the way, but, over tho lust bit St. Omer. headed hiiri and got third place. Tho winner was ridden by tho Trentham liglit-weight, C. Heed, a younger brother to the well-known horseman of tho same name.
Merry' Jack, who has been racing consistently of late; scored in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples, after a very close finish with Silver Monarch, who showed a- glimpso of form, and was prominent throughout. Gallagher, who finished third, and Baudaloro wero tho only others .to finish. Toka, tho Maiden winner, was saddled up again in the Hack Flying Handicap, and after a, good finish with tho second favourite, Detroit, he won by a length. Tho Trontham-trained Alloy hud si big break at one stage, but tired badly, and was beaten into third place. The topweight, Discussion! finished next. There wero only four ru.nners in the Telephone Handicap, and from a beautiful 6tart thoy raced-together for a furlong, whero Master Achilles fell back. Bradamauto led Goldbearing into the straight, where Hushabye closed up on them,, but over tho last half-furlong Master Achilles won easily. Rongora and St. Omor wero saddled up for the second tjma in tho coitfluding event, which was voted a good thing for Mvlatus. The chestnut •gelding jumped oiit in front, and under a strong pull ho ,led all tho way from Rongora, and Sir Fisher, who tilled tho minor places.
