BANK OP NEW ZEALAND. Shareholders of tho Bank of New Zealand have been officially advised by ciri cular issued by the board of directors of the appointment of Mr. E. W. Kano to temporarily fill the; vacancy on the board caused by the death of .Mr. Martin Kennedy. The election of a shareholders' representative on the directorate to fill the vacancy referred to has been deferred to June, 1917. Mr. William Watson, shareholders' director, has' also addressed a circular, to shareholders giving his reasons for supporting Mr. Kane. Inter alia, Mr. Watson writes: -'Owing to Mr. Kane's thorough knowledge of the bar.Ys affairs, and of' the personnel of we customers and staff, he was enabled to fulfil the duties of direotor in an unusually high degree, and - both Mr. Kennedy and 1, on account of tho shareholders, regretted his absence from tho board. On the present occasion I was fortified in furthering Mr.. Kane's apporntment by being confident that,' had Mr. Kennedy survived instead of myself, he would, have acted as I was acting, and I was further fortified by receiving from hie executors, and many other prominent shares holders in New Zealand, written and telegraphic requests to support Mr. Kane's appointment. I also ascertained that tin Government of the Dominion had no objection to it."

SOUTHERN IIABKETS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Chrlstchurch, September 12. The wheat market Is lirm but quiet. A few sales ore taking piece on the basis o£ late prices, but there is no activity In tho demand. There does not appear to bo tho wheat in the country equal to tho quantity shown by tho agricultural statistics. The potato market is (in a somewhat doubtful position owing to importations into Auckland from Australia. The most is evidently being made of the fact that supplies can be obtained from this outside sourcej although the quantity that shipping space can be found for cannot be large. In the meantime some of tho local buyors jare standing out of tho market, as thoy say the best ofiters from Auckland ere below local values. Those who are still -willing to buy are prepared to givo £7 at country etotions for good samples. Potatoes are not now turning out of the pits well, and much is considerably Tcduccd affer ipdching over. Supplies are therefore likely to run out much earlier than they did last year.

Mellsop, Eliott and Co., Palnierston North, local agents) report on the frozen meat market, under date Loudon,. July 14, as follows:— Home Grown.—The market has again been well supplied in comparison to the trade.! Scotch sheep are 4darca, but Irish lamba have been a prominent feature. Frozen—New Zealand meat is still scarce in London, and the opportunity lias presented itßelf for making Argentine sheep and lambs dearer again. Chilled beef from the United States has been plentiful, and frozen beef of all descriptions consequently meets with a very poor demand, the value of New Zealand bull beef' being no more than K|d. for sidc£. * Prices for weeks ending:— July 14..
