MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A VARIETY OF CASES. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided in tbo Magistrate's Court yesterday. Eva Grcil, charged with assisting in the managemont of a house of illfame, was remanded till Soptcmbcr 16. Bail was fixed at £25. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the accused. Arthur Simmons was fined £1 for having nsod obscene language, and £1 for having resisted arrest. Fedor Kardonnie, a Russian seaman, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for desertion from tho steamer Corinthic. Evan Piesoroft, also a Russian, from the Corinthic, was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment on a charge of liis (being a prohibited immigrant) unlawfully landing in New Zealand. Pieseroft will bo put aboard the first vessel leaving Tiere. Thomas Yates, who admitted stealing a rug belonging to Richard Tomkins, a farmer, who drove into Upper Hutt recently and left the rug in his vehicle, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. , Seven Chinese who stand charged on various gaming counts were further remanded till next Monday. On three charges of stealing cases of petrol (in all four guineas' worth) from the shop of J. E. Fitzgerald, John Alfred Shirley was remanded for a week. For insobriety, Wu.' Gordon was fined £2, and Peter M'Gough 10s. James A. Cavill was fined £2 for refusal to quit tho National Hotel when requested by a barman to do so. Joseph Williams was fined £1 respecting a charge of assaulting John Smith.
