THE CALL FOR MEN
RECRUITING IN WELLINGTON. Tho Recruiting Board has decided that for the future Ineu who register for service will not bo able to select drafts more than three months ahead of tho date of enlistment. Tho period in tho past has been six months, and though in practice the recruiting officers have sought to keep ;tho period shorter/ it has been possible for a, man to register in January for service in the following July. The near approach of the time when compulsory service will bo operative has mado this state of affairs more than ever undesirable. The change will not be retrospective. Men who aro already registered will bo called up for the draft which tliey selected at tho timo of their enlistment. But in the future no man will bo accepted more than three months ahead of tho date on which ho is prepared to enter camp. The following men have been passed as fit in No. 5 Group (Wellington City and suburbs), their branch being tho infantry, except whero otherwise stated: — O. M'lntosh, bnildor, City. T. M. Sis additional men were sent into camp yesterday for training with tho medical unit that is being prepared at Awapuni for service on the hospital shiip Marama during her next commission. Their names were: —H. J. Aplin, E. S. Bardell, F. J. Gaze, C. C. Staub, D. Wheeler, and W. A. S. Warno. The Marama, which, js now on hor way to New Zealand, will land ' her present complement, and tako away with her tho medical staff, which was employed on the Maheno during her first commission. Tho members of this staff are in training at Awapuni, where- they are receiving advanced structionBrisk Recruiting at Town Hall. \l''rom two niul thv<> re-Tints per 'lay, the- number of men registered at tho Town Hall recruiting office smco the proclamation was issued (i.e., from September 1 until yesterday afternoon) has risen to over 16 a day, most of them the right type of men, who are not likely to bo turned down either in town or at the camp. Up till yesterday evening, 150 men had been registered since September 1, which, with the two Sundays omitted, gives a very fair average indeed.
