Charles and Mrs. Louisson, of Christchurch, returned from a visit to Australia by the Manuka yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Gould and Mr. and Mrs. Wells, of Christchurch, wero also passengers by tho same steamer. Mr. Chas. Haines, of Wellington, Dr. Sully, and tho Rev. Mr. Gilmour arrived irom Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. MrJ W. Mowbray, of the managerial staff of Levin and" Co., returned from a trip to Australia by tho Manuka yesterday. Mr. John Fuller, jun., a member of tho City Council, who has been in Sydney for two months past, arrived here yesterday by tho Manuka on a brief visit to 'Wellington. Mr. George Price, who with his brother, the late Mr. Alfred Price, founded the engineering firm of A. and G. Price at tho Thames 45 years ago, and Mr. John Watson, who has been secretary of the firm from the outset, retired from active service in the business last week, and were farewelled at a gathering of the combined staffs. A fortnight ago a cablegram was received by Captain Hursthouse at Featherston, from the War Office, London, to say that 2nd Lieut. L. F. Hursthouse, of the Royal Flying Corps, was wounded. Last Saturday another cablegram came from the War Office to say that on August 10 he was admitted to No. 32 General Hospital Port Said, suffering from a fractured! leg and injury to the face. Lieut. Hursthouse was farming at Otaki whea war broke out. He left New Zealand, to offer his services at Home in January, 1915, and was successful •in gaining a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. Ho is a brother to Mrs. Oliver, ,Mrs. S. A. Atkinson, and Miss Dorothy Hursthouse, of Kelburn. News has been received in! Wellington that Mr. Edgar Garland, son of Mr. Frank L. Garland, of Oriental Bay, passed the Roval Aero tests' at Auckland on Saturday. Mr. Garlauid, who is 20 years of age, was born and educated "in Wellington. On leavung college he joined the staff, of Messrs. Levin and Co., and afterwards entered upon a farming life. He is one of tho eight New Zealanders selected .by tho military authorities to proceed Home at an early date to join the Royal Flying Corps. Mr Mark Cohen, editor of the'Dunedin "Star," and Mrs. Cohen were passengers from Sydney by tho Manuka yesterday. Sir John Findlay and Mr. D. M. Findlay, of Wellington, returned from a visit to Australia by the Manuka yesterday. . iA Press Association telegram from Grovmonth announces the death of Mr. Micliael Phillips, for 39 years employed by the Grey County Counoil, during the iast 28 years as county clerk. Deceased was in his 80th year. Edward Dwyer, the youngest soldier to win the Victoria Cross, and knowa also as "Tho Little Corporal," for gallantry in leading! a charge, has been killed in action—Press Association. Mr. Harold Gregson, of Auckland, who is to judge in the musio sections at tho Dunedin competitions, left for the south by tho Maori last evening. The following changes of management in Messrs. Dalgety and Co.'s service are announced:—Mr. J. G. Herdman, of Napier, to bo manager at Christchurch; Mr. C. E. Morris, of Timaru, to bo manager at Napier; Mr. E.'G- Rawnsley, of Christchurch, to at Timaru. Dr. Edgar, of Napier, has been appointed a captain in the N.Z.M.C. Mr. A. W. 0. Travers is paying an official visit to tho Foresters' Lodges in the Wairarapa on behalf of tho Wellington District Executive. Miss May Kane (1.5. T.M., London), has been appointed by tho Hospital Board to take charge of the Mackenzie treatment of the infantile- paralysis cases in Wellington. She commences her dutfes at tho Hospital this' week.
