A LONG WAY ROUND
HOW THE RUSSIANS GOT TO v FRANCE. v Referring 'to the enormous part that Russia was noiv taking in the present war, Mr. Horace Goldm, now appearing at the' Grand Opera House, said that the world was only beginning to realise the enormous strength of the Russian military machine. "T was at Colombo when the firet lot of Russian troops from Siberia, bound for France, called there," said the magician. "I give you my word it was a sight to remember. There were 4000 of them, picked men, each of tliem 61t. tall, dressed very smartly, and disciplined to tho finest point. Why, they were so well behaved, so gentle and courteous, even when on l'oavo, that they earned the admiration of all. In their simplicity thoy were like children, and Colombo went mad over them, but, by gosh, what fighting men they looked I They did a route march of about six milos—• marching with a slow impressive step, in which'tho knee is brought well up and the feet aro all brought down to the ground together. To hear tho sound of those men marching, -headed by a- magnificent military band, made tne feel creepy. "I never saw one of those inch tho worse of drink, and they behaved with' tho utmost courtesy to everyone, and I was that proud of them that I invited thorn to the show, but the commanding officer said as I could not accommodate the I couldn't havo any. And he was right. He did not want to breed any jealousy. The officers of that.division told mo that they bad taken three months between the time they left their base in Russia before they readied France."
