THE SMALL INVESTORS' PART

WAR LOAN CERTIFICATES

A SUMMARY OF SALES

At the close of business on Thursday last AVar Loan Certificates had been on sale in New Zoaland for exactly four H'eeks. The telegraphed returns or sales during that period have just been received from all parts of the Dominion, and the total amounts to no less a sum than £816,707 16s. The bulk of this money has been subscribed by small investors and by people who, in the ordinary sense, cannot be called investors at all, but who have been pntriotio enough to place some small sum st the disposal of the Government in order to help in the prosecution of the war. As each week passes the success of the War Loan Certificate scheme becomes more and more pronounced. Wellington still easily leads with sales amounting to £198,983, followed in order by Christchurch £120,354, Dunedin £105,000, and Auckland £92,805. The table below shows the amounts received during the four weeks from the various postal districts of New Zealand. Further amounts received in the main centres during the week end have enabled the post office to bring its total payments to the Treasury on account of War Loan Certificates up to £825,000. If the present rate of sales continues until the end of December, the total raised by this means should be well over one million pounds, especially now that the question of the custody of cer. tificates has been undertaken by the post office.
