LEATHER WAISTCOATS
PRESENTED TO "SEVENTEENTHS"
The men of the Seventeenth Reinforcements who were enlisted in tho Canterbury Military District, including Canterbury, Wostland, Marlborough, and Nelson, were paraded at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and presented with leather waistcoats. Mrs. Holland, Mayoress of Christchurch, and a number of Christchuroh ladies and gentlemen, made the distribution of the waistcoats, and in a brief speech Mrs. Holland told the men of the good wishes that went with the gifts, from many who were unable to go to the war themselves, but deeply appreciated the "sacrifice made by those .who enlisted. During the afternoon the visitors were shown over the camp by the Camp Commandant, Lieut.Colonel H. R. Potter and the Camp Adjutant, Captain W. M. Bell. They showed keen interest in the various features of tho training, and expressed their satisfaction with the arrangements for the soldiers' welfare while in camp..
