TUG KOPUTAI FOR SYDNEY. Rw.eni.ly tho paddle-tug Koputoi wns bought by tho Sydney tug lirni, Messrs. J. and J. Daley, from tho Otago Harbour Board. In order to take over tlio tug, Captain F. J. Dunn arrived from Sydney by tlio Mocraki on August 28, and at that timo it was understood, that tho tug would havo to tie towed across, as her coal capacity was not large enough to enable her to do tlio trip by herself, but it has now been decided tliat tho tug will do the trip unaccompanied, and will proceed part way under oanvos, and the remainder by steam. She is expected to leavo Duncdin either to-day or-Saturday, and is at present in dock, undergoing overhaul. , Tho vessel ivns recently surveyed, and found to be in excellent condition. Sho ivas built by Wiuga-te and Co., at Wlntolncli, Scotland, iu 1876, and is therefore forty years old. She is a paddle-wheel iron boat of 158 tons gross, ajid lior engines. wlich were also made by Wingate and Co.. Glasgow, fl.ro capable of developing 120 horse-power. Hcv engines wcro renewed in 1906. Tho Koputai having been replaced by .'V new tug built somo timo ago o.t Port Ohalmern, tlie Otago Harbour Board liavo no further uso for lier.

LONDON TRADERS REPORTED. Tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company adviso that the It.JI.H. Athenic and tho s.s. Mamari arrived at London from Now Zealand on September 6. /Uso that the lonic, which is ooming from London via Capo Town, is duo in Auckland on September 30, and at Wellington about a week later.

BLACKBALL STEAMERS. The Blackball Coal Company advise that tho Ngaherc, which left hero with the hulk Elinor Vernon in tow for Auckland, will, after unloading at Auckland; pick _up a cargo mostly of cement fcr New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Wellington. and will sail r.ound the North Cape, calling l first at New Plymouth. 5 Tho Ngatoro, which went on the Slip yesterday to have her *mw rudder fixed, will be off this moraines:, and will then "swing" to have her compasses adjusted. Sho will leave for Grcymouth in tho evenins, to load coal for the Railway Department at Oamaru. Tho Ngakuta, which left Wellington on Tuesday night, has not been reported at Greymouth yet, and a.s tho weather there is rough, it i 6 concluded that tho vessel i« unable to cross tho bar inward. She will load coal at Gerymouth as soon as pos sible, mostly for tho Railway Department. at Lyttolton, and will then return to Grcymouth to load for Wellington. . Owing to bad weather on the West Coast the Kamona and Mapourika are delayod by the bar at Grcymouth. As they are to load for Wellington, it is not known when they will. get back here. Tliu Karu, from New Plymouth, has not been reported at Grcymouth yet. The Port Napier, originally from London, left Freuiantle on September 5 for Melbourne, where she is due on September 10. She will, after leaving Melbourne, call at Sydney. Auckland, and Napier, and is expected here during the first week in October. ' Captain C. Tendorp, master of the Wairau, has signed off, and has been replaced by* Captain Deiley, who lias been on leave.

Mr.- Edward Cartnor has signed on tho Ngatoro, in place of Air. li. 1\ Olsen, who has joined tho Awahon. The Opawa. which came off tho Slip ! yesterday, will procecd to Blenheim this 1 afternoon. Hatricli and Co. advise that the Tainui is receiving enrgo for Waitara and New Plymoutih, and leaves to-day for these ports. The John is cxpectcd from Timaru via ports next Thursday: Sho will load cargo for Wangamil, and will probably leave j Wellington on Thursday night. ! It is expected that tho JCapuni, which j was taken off the Slip yesterday, will be .ready for sea on Monday, when sho will sail for^Patea. The Kaiapoi, which." left Auckland at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday, is due here on Saturday. Sho is coming via Napier. Tho Tarawera sailed at 12.30 p.m. yesterday from Napier, and is expected in Wcl--1 liugtou at 7 o'clock this morning. She 1 has 500 ton© of cargo for here, and is expected to leave for Lyttelton and Dunedin at 5 o'clock this eveniug. The destination of the American schooner Bertha Dolbccr, now on iicr way from San Francisco to New Zealand, seems to have been definitely fixed •as Napier. Cablegrams received at Wellington first stated she was coming to Wellington. Another, later, said Lyttelton, but on Wednesday further advico was received stating that sho had left San Francisco for Napier. _ • After cruising round the various mission stations in the Pacific, the Melanesinn Mission Society's steamer Southern Crosses expected tp arrivo in Auckland about Octobcr 5. She usually returns tarly in September. The frcow Magic is at present loading coal at Puponga for Picton. After discharging at Pict-on she will sail to Sandy Bay to load'stoi»« for Wellington. > In connection with the wreck of tho Stcrmbird there is a- somewhat strange coincidence. In 1891 the Stormbird went ashoro on Wanganui breakwater, and was towed off by tfhc Moa. A few years a{ro the Moa was burned to the water's- edge, and sank within sight of tho breakwater, and now the Stormbird has gone to her doom within a few hundred yards of where she previously struck. The Federal and Shire Oompany's steamer Devon. 473 ft. in length, now on her maiden visit to Duncdin, successfully negotiated the Victoria Olmnnel when drawing 22ft. 6in. This -was done with only 6ft. 9in. in the gauge, and establishes a fresh record for the port. The previous best was that of the Port HaTdy, in. Jnnc last- That vessel drew 22ft. sin„ with, however, sft. llin. in the cause.
