DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM. The following progress statement, showing the work done by tho Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, as at September 5, has been issued by tho Minister in Charge (tho Hoi}. A. L. Herdraan):— Total number of men on register: (a) Disposed of, 3988; (b) under action, 1019; (c) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports), 375. Total, 5382. Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—(A) Cases disposed of: (a) Men who have work-to return to, and mon who have re-enlisted or returned to military .duty, etc., 1596; (b) men placed in employment, 952; (c) men who have signed "assistance not required," 972; (d) left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 134; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them, but failed to start work,-201; (f) men who have drawn sections of land, 133. Total 3988. (B) Cases under action: (a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 182; (b) awaiting further advice (including men who have stated that they aro not yet ready for work), 510; (c) at present on Employment Wanted Register, 327. Total. 1019. ' (0) Cases not ready for action: Mon convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by the military authorities, 375. Grand total, 5382. ' Employment is wanted in Wellington as follows:—Light outdoor work, 1; clerical, 1; store work, 1.
