WORKERS' INJURIES
COMPENSATION IN TWO CASES. In the Arbitration Court yesterday two cases were heard in which workers claimed compensation for injuries received in the course of their'employment. Both men were employees of the Union Steam Sliip Company—one a wharf- labourer, and the other a' seaman—and in both eases compensation was awarded. The Court consisted' of Judge Stringer (president)', Mr. W. Scott (employers' representative), and Mr. J. A'. M'Cullough (workers'' representative). i In the first case, William Chappie Smith, wharf labourer, claimed compensation in respect of injuries received while assisting to unload coal from the s.s. Bakanoa on December 23. Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for Smith, and Mi;. P. Levi for the TJnion Company, and the Court was asked to fix the amount to which Smith was entitled. !. Judgment was entered for Smith for £125, with £5 ss. costs, and witnesses' espouses. The other case was brought by Walter Sarsfield, a seaman on _ the s.s. Karu, who said that he had injured a knee in the service of the company, and was now unable to go io sea, and able to do only light work on land. Two possiblo explanations of the condition of his knee wero oflercd. He said that .while alongside the wharf at Picton he slipped when throwing a sling. It was said, also, that he wis employed for a time at-a winch, and the knee was in contact with a steam-pipe, and a< rheumatoid condition had been set up. ' Counsel in this case were the same as in the first action. > After hearing evidence the Court awarded Sarsfield £60 in full settlement, with costs f.l 75., and witnesses' expenses.
