EXCESSIVE SPEED OF TRAINS
Sir, —Frequently letters have appeared in Tub .Dominion protesting against, tho excessive speed at which some of the express trains are driven round sharp, dangerous curves. This is particularly in evidence on certain sections of the Main Trunk, and in prophesying a bad smash, if not checked, I am voicing the freely-expressed opinion of'inost seasoned'travellers. . For more than five years I have travelled weekly between Thorndon and Taumarnmii, and can hardy bo called; "nervy," hut it requires no expert to prophesy disaster eventually. I instance in particular the curves after passing through the first tunnel'north of "Huntcrville. In taking these on. the down grade I have often seen both officials and -passengers very much alarmed at; the criminally reckless man-' nor in which -these curves are negotiated. - ' ' It' would almost look as if _ the "speeding up" policy recently instituted by the Department has been effected at the expense of public safety.—l am, etc., , TRAVELLER.
